New fuel guage sending unit - now worse!

My fuel guage finally stopped moving last week. It would sit at 3/8 full whether I was topped off or empty. Figured the sending unit was bad. Bought one at the dealer. It bench tested out to spec with my ohmmeter (110ohms at full, 1.7ohms at empty). When I had the sending unit removed, I shorted both sending unit wires together (no resistance, right?) and the gauge went to Full?!?! I would have expected it to go to Empty. Oh well, I just ignored it and installed the new sending unit.

Now my gauge sits pegged to Empty! Any suggestions? Does this indicate something wrong with the guage itself?

Thanks in advance for any help....

Check your guage. You might have damaged it when you shorted the wires together. (It's not designed to work without a resister in the circuit.)

Thanks. Already replaced the gauge - same result: sitting on empty.... going to double check for good grounds this weekend...
Anybody know what the doohickey on the back of the instrument cluster PC board is that looks like a short stick of gum? It meters out to 0 ohms...... Is it related to the fuel gauge circuit?
