Fuel Smell

'89 Trooper 2.6L - In cab fuel smell has been driving me nuts. At first, I thought it was due to a fuel filler/vent leak, but that wasn't it. Happens with a full or almost empty tank, after sitting overnight (sometimes), or while driving. No pattern. Finally, now that the weather is getting warmer, I have noticed that I smell fuel only when the windows are open while driving. It is tuned right (mileage is 18-19mpg), valves adjusted within 6 months, exhaust has a small leak at the midpipe before the cat. Is this a leaky injector, or incomplete combustion and an exhaust leak? Opinions and experiences appreciated.

Re: Fuel Smell

Good idea to inspect all your fuel lines and hose while the vehicle is running. in the past I've been able to find leaks in the system that only leaked under pressure. Anytime you smell raw fuel you should track it down ASAP

Re: Fuel Smell

it could possibly be your fuel vapor canister. the coffee can shaped thingy located on the fire wall. if it is not working anymore it usually starts to smell of gas.
