Jeep amc bolt to IH amc

Just out of curiousity does anyone know if the 360 jeep amc motor bolts to IH trannys? The housing pattern looks the same to me.

Re: Jeep amc bolt to IH amc

If you have an IH that came with a Jeep motor (232/258 six), the Jeep 360 should bolt to the bellhousing. The Jeep engine won't bolt up to the bellhousing for an IH engine however. If you are asking if the IH trans will bolt to a Jeep engine AND bellhousing, can't help you there.

Hmmm! That's pretty odd they're both amc but still different. Must be like gm there's a chevy bolt up and a buick bolt up. So how about strictly IH bellhousings ,,,they all the same as far as slant4 to a 304 or 345 with the exception of the jeep straight six style?

Re: Jeep amc bolt to IH amc

It depends. As I understand it the bellhousings for Scout II applications are all the same for all IH motors including the 152 and 196 slant 4 motors, as well as the 304 and 345 V8's, and the 392 V8 for that matter which wasn't an option in a Scout II but will fit.

However, for Scout 800 applications the 4 cylinder bellhousing tilts the motor something like 15 degrees. Plus I think the length of that bellhousing is different from a V8 bellhousing. So as I understand it for these reasons you can't use a Scout 80/800 bellhousing in a Scout II.

A couple of other things to consider depending on which IH engine you want to install are:

1) There are differently weighted flywheels on the 4's compared to the V8's which will bolt up but are not compatible and will cause driveline vibration.

2) If a Scout II came with the AMC 258 from the factory, the motor mounts are different from the motor mounts for the IH motors. In such a case you would need different mounts.
