buying question

What is a good mileage limit when buying a scout, if you dont want to end up doing much mech work

That depends on how well it was treated.

If it was treated reasonably well, the IH powerplants and drivetrains routinely last to around 250k miles. That means that typically at 100k on the clock, it's just getting broken in.

Of course, you CAN (I have. :-( ) finish off a 'Binder motor well in advance of the quarter-million-mile mark, but when treated right they seem to last a long time.

You're probably going to need to replace the spring bushings on anything you buy. Brakes, wheel bearings, etc. Mostly the minor mechanical stuff.

Motors should probably run well up to around 200k on average, and I've almost never heard of a stick tranny going "bad", though 727s do wear out from time to time - same as the stick's clutch will.

Usually it's a lot more difficult to find a good body than it is to find a good powertrain.
