Back End Noise from Traveler-79

I am new to the Scout and 4x4's in general. I have noticed that after about 30 minutes of driving, I get a loud metal-on-metal "clunking" sound when making tight right or left turns. The sound is coming from the rear of the truck. I am replacing the u-joint this weekend but am afraid that's not it.
The worst I heard it was after a 45 minute drive to the airport I had to go up the circular ramp 4 levels. Really loud and I wasn't sure I was going to make it to the top.
Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for?
Thanks.
Marc

Re: Back End Noise from Traveler-79

Is this Scout equipped with a locker or other traction device in the rear end?

Often this will result in clicking when the vehicle corners.

Could also be your spider gears going out. When those fail, it will make VERY obvious clunking.

I'd suggest going to NAPA and getting some gear oil 80-90W, , limited slip additive (if vehicle is so equipped) a gasket (or RTV) for a rear Dana 44 and pop the cover.

See what's going on. If there's metal on metal doing damage you'll see it pretty quickly. And there will be metal shavings in the oil.

Either way, driving it with metal shavings in the fluid will result in a more expensive repair as the rear end will likely need to be completely opened up and flushed out.
