1980 scout diesel

hey folks,
i'm a little out of my area with a question so don't laugh if i ask dumb questions. i am thinking about buying a 1980 scout diesel. don't know a think about them. i'm not sure if it runs yet but just in case it doesn't i need to know what engine swaps will work with the least effort and expense and also what i can easily find. not worried about horsepower too much because what i do know is that scouts are damn near bulletproof when it comes to driveline. not looking to outrun anyone-- just looking for a good time-- mostly trail rides and a little mud once in a while. i'm looking forward to getting this thing and getting it on the road but i don't want it to cost an arm and a leg. i already have a '72 jeep commando (looks like a scout) and i'm not sure what the wife is going to say about another project. appreiate any help or insight

Re: 1980 scout diesel

Going off the top of my head here... havent looked at Scout diesels in some time. I think I might have posted something here a few days ago on the same subject... but here goes.

IH used the Nissan SD33 and the SD33T in their diesel applications. They are good engines and will give you in the mid 20's for fuel economy. They sale for more money and keep their market value then a gas IH. I say if it is a good price then get it. People also like to use that Nissan diesel for diesel conversions.
