Buying a 76 Scout II Newbie Questions.

I have just started looking at Scouts as a trail/daily driver. What are some of the common problems that I should be looking for... i.e. cracked frame by steering box, etc.
Or if there are any mechanical issues that show up regularly that need to be addressed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Buying a 76 Scout II Newbie Questions.

Scouts, Jeeps, any older 4X4's all have some common problems. It's the challenge of making something that you can be proud of is whats fun. I drove a Scout and a Scout Traveler for years and still own a few, but you may need something that you don't work on for a daily driver. Keep the Scout as something special for recreation and off time/road enjoyment.

Re: Buying a 76 Scout II Newbie Questions.

Look for lots of bondo and/or rust. The v-8's were known for a soft cam, so listen for pecking in the valve train. I love the Scout and the Scout II, but I don't know if I would want one for a daily driver if I didn't have something to fall back on. They're getting old enough now to where it's difficult to find one with low mileage and especially hard to find one with a good body, since they were so prone to rust anyway. I guess parts are easier to get now than they were for a while, but still....
