Scout II, ticking when hubs are locked and in 2WD

Hi all, I have a 78 Scout II with a 304 and 727 auto tranny and a Dyna 20 t case. The Scout has 104,000 miles on it.
When I lock the hubs in 4x4 and drive in 2 wheel high I hear a mild ticking when going over 30 or 40 MPH. When I put transfer case in 4 wheel high the noise
goes away. I thought it was the transfer case, I had a extra around and replaced it. Waste of time. Not the problem. Thought it was a U-joint on the right front axle. I took it to a repair place and had it replaced by someone without the proper socket for the large nuts behind the locking hubs. This chump used a chisel and hammer to remove the nuts. I saw this after he started and was pissed. Anyway, after the U-joint was changed (another animal job) it still ticks as before. Needless to say, Iím NOT going back to this animal again. ANY clues where the ticking sound could be coming from???????
Seems like I should have asked here FIRST before going through all this!!!!!!!

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
