Steering Box Question

I've fabbed up a reinforcement bracket for the back side of my steering box (Scout II) out of 1/4" steel. I noticed, however, on Jim Weed's website that he doesn't recommend welding the plate in place - just through bolting it. I've also seen the same thing on several other Scouts. Why not weld it to the frame?

Re: Steering Box Question

Not sure if there is a reason not to weld it. I welded mine. I only welded mine at the top and
bottom though - along the corners of the frame.

Later,
Curt

Re: Steering Box Question

I asked my Dad about this one, he's a aerospace welder, and he said that the frame is not heat treated so you should be able to weld the plate on the frame as long as you dont make the plate square, it should be a dimond or trapazoid shape. Also you should not weld it all in one shot, but weld some in one place and then some on the other side and then a little in the middle. Jumping around will help keep the frame from distorting.

Frame

FWIW, I recall the IH manual saying something about heat-treatment of the frame and such.. but I could be wrong. Double check your IH Service manual for the proper welding techniques (electric arc only - no gas welding! <g>)
