Emission Equipment on Scout 800

I just took all of the emission equipment off of my 68 800. It had an airpump and air manifolds which injected air into the heads right above the exhaust manifolds. I also added a pertronix ignition. After doing this work, my exhaust has an odd sound which was not present before. Anyone had any similar experiences?

Re: Emission Equipment on Scout 800

you had emmision equipement on a 68? is it not the original engine? make sure you sealed off all the holes, and there could be some obstructions in the exhaust (from the emmisions equipement that was taken off or whatever was used to seal the holes.... and maybe its supposed to sound that way

Re: Emission Equipment on Scout 800

Yes, it's the original engine. Boought the scout from the original owner..had every receipt for everything ever done to it. The owners manual and engine compartment refer to this engine as the V266E..I assume the E refers to emission controlled. Anyway, the manual states that the airpump filter should be replaced every 12K miles etc, etc. Anyway, I took all the crap off of the engine and finally found a reference to the chirping noise from the exhaust in the binderbulletin tech talk section. Someone recommended replacing the injection tubes with IH plugs - I forget the part number. Anyway, I bought these plugs from Vintage International and installed them and they stopped the chirping. The scout is running like a top with its new pertronx ignition. Now all I have to do is replace the worn out throwout bearing.
