Scout II Q\'s

Note: Also posted on rec.autos.4x4 - jd

Alright I'm new to IH & Scouts, but I'm confused. What is the model designation of the short wheelbase (100"?) Scout II? Does it have a name? The Traveler (also a Scout II, right?) is the 118"? The Terra is a pick-up version of the Traveler, right? I've tried the binderbulletin.org site as well as general surfing without any definitive answer. Are the Scout 80/800's the same wheelbase as the SSII's? Are the SSII's the only short wheelbase Scout II's in the late 70's?

Re: Scout II Q\'s

Jerry,
1.100in Scout II designation is just that....Scout II.
2. Does it have a name.....Scout II.
3. 118in Scout II is refered to as the Traveler....correct.
4. Terra is the pick-up version of the Traveler....correct.
5. The 80/800 scouts made from 1961-to 1971 are indeed 100in wheel base.
The Terra 118in wb was made from 1976-1980. They used a fiberglass top. You could also get a metal pickup top on the 100in wb 80/800s from 1961-1971 and also on the 100in wb Scouts from1972-1975. You use the term SSII which refers to a special model of the short wheelbase Scout II's made from 1977-1980. The Super Scout came without the removable hardtop, with out steel doors, and had rounded fiberglass door inserts. Vinyl soft top an soft doors were available.
100in wheelbase Scouts were made from 1961-1980. 118in wb scouts were made from 1976-1980. The 100in wb scouts came with metal tops. the 118in Travelers came with a fiberglass full top and liftgate. Hope this helps.

Re: Scout II Q\'s

Thanks, Bill. I questioned the designation "Scout II" only because I've seen ads of "Scout II Travelers." I hate to presume something advertised as a Scout II is the 100"wb truck, but hey! I'll look at more Scouts that way, right?

One more thing. There is a Scout (80/800) short wb nearby (*might* be for sale, need to work on the guy) that must have the Half cab and bulkhead installed to make it a quasi-pickup. Can the bulkhead be removed easily and a full top(hard or soft) be installed? I'm guessing it can but is it something that can be done relatively quickly?

Cheers

Re: Scout II Q\'s

Jerry,
100 wb made from 61-65.....scout 80
100 wb made from 65-71.....scout 800
100 wb made from 72-80.....scout II
118 wb made from 76-80.....traveler or terra
Things get a little confusing from 76-80 when both
100 and 118 wb were built.

The bulkhead in scouts built in 61-to july62 were non removable type.
after july62 they could be unbolted. The travel top (full top) should bolt
right up.

Re: Scout II Q\'s

The official designation for the 100" wheelbase Scout II is the Traveltop. Got this direct from the original owners manual that came with my '79 Traveltop Scout II. Phew, that's a long name. The owners manual also refers to the traveller and SSII as Scout IIs. Hope this helps.

Scout, anything else is just a car.

Re: Scout II Q\'s

Well, at least that makes sense in regards to the ads that I've seen. What's ironic is that when I've searched trader.com for Scout II's, none are found. However, I find a bunch of Scouts (sans II) from the late 70's! I don't think I've EVER seen a Scout advertised with it's full pedigree (i.e., 1979 Traveltop Scout II). Thanks, Mark!
