Head ache of a question

I have now obtained some heads from a guy that just gave them to me. I was wondering how to identify them. My engine is a 392, and I have been told that the 304 and 345 have a plate on the head saying V-whatever. Does the 392 have somthing like this. I already have intake manifold gaskets that fit these heads and they also fit the 392, but I was wondering how to tell what year of block they came off, and if they will work.
What is the difference in the two different 392 blocks. I thought it was one uses tubes going to the head, and the other does not use these, is it that simple?

Re: Head ache of a question

You can measure the valves and compare with a 392 vs a 345.. 392 uses larger valves.

the IC 392 doesn't run water from the WP to the heads, but the heads still have frost plugs in 'em, so it's hard to tell unless you know which coolant passages to look at on the underside of the head.

I don't have any pre-IC 392 heads around any more, but could probably snap a pic of an IC vs. a 345 head if I get the time/chance/remember/desire/..

Otherwise, you need to cross-reference the casting numbers on the heads with the big head casting list that was published in the BinderBulletin a while back. Dunno where my copy is at the moment..

Re: Head ache of a question

Thanks for the reply, however it seems that my plans once again don't work out. One of the heads is cracked, so out the door goes my idea. Thanks though, I looked at them and they weren't a matching set anyway, one must have been from a 345 and the other a 392, intakes were the same, but combustion chambers were different. When I got them it was at night, and all I looked at was the intake ports to see if they were the same.
