When you say solids, do you have fulltime 4 wheel drive (70's style trucks) and it is just a cap over the hub......or solid as it is the newer style with auto locking hubs?

So you have auto locking hubs then I take it. The cap is held on with several allen head bolts, but you have no selector for going between free and lock and your supposed to back up so far after disengaging 4 wheel so the hubs can unlock themselves.

If it were me, I'd switch them out to a selectable one. They aren't that expensive and you know if your hubs are locked or not. I had auto's on a truck I had. My dad actually bought it new and they worked fine at first, but by the time I bought it several years later, they sometime wouldn't disengage as they were supposed to so I switched them out.

Well you did not say what Yr truck you have but if its 80s and older and you don't have locking hubs then you should have drive flanges. that means there locked all the time. Manual locking hubs are better. Better MPG, less moving parts.
Less ware and tare on the front end..
