Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

I'm planning on building a custom dash in the near future. I want to go with all new aftermarket gauges and such. Just wondering what is the legal way to document the new speedo, and if there are any issues with relocating the VIN plate.
Anybody have experience with this? Thanks

No answers huh? Oh well, I still have a few months before I start this. I'll try to post my progress as I go.

Re: Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

There's a company that makes an entire kit that uses autometer guages or something. I dunno why the speedometer would matter. If you're htinking about the mileage on the odometer, after a certain age of vehicel I beleive they don't track it anymore. I know my truck is on it's 3rd speedometer since they die after a while.

VIN plate, again not definate on, but I know the VIN is stamped on the frame too.

Re: Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

I was thinking of the mileage on the odometer. My plan is to strip the entire stock dash out, including all of the metal. Then I'm going to make a frame of 1" square tube and skin it with aluminum.
I thought I could rivet the vin plate to the new dash, just didn't know if it would be legal or not.

the legal would be different from state to state.

Re: Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

Oh, so let me warn you about removing the dash. I have completely removed a dash from an '84 parts truck we have, it's kind of a pain. There are two bolts, one on either side, that bolt it to the cab, no biggee. HERE'S the fun part. The entire upper lip of the dash is spot welded to an identical lip on the cab, that is the lower edge of the windshield. You've gotto remove the windshield, remove the stripping, wire brush the paint off, drill out the spotwelds, grind a little, and now you can remove the dash. I can go get a pic of the parts truck if I need to to explain that, but IMHO it ain't worth it to remove it.

Re: Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

I was thinking that since I don't care to keep the old dash intact, I could just cut it out in pieces. Then I don't have to worry about removing the window.
If anybody has any pictures of a clean cab with no dash, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: Dash and VIN plate relocation ????

Yeah, I could go get one. The parts truck that I did that procedure to is sitting out behind the barn. There are a few bits of HVAC ducting, and bits of the wiring harness, otherwise it's a pretty empty cab.
