NP 203 to a 205?

The NP 203 transfer case on my 78 just crapped out big time, and now my dad wants to sell it. This is the first truck i've driven, so naturally i want to keep it. I was wonderin if a NP 205 would be a direct bolt-on in place of the 203.....is it possible?

Re: NP 203 to a 205?

you never forget your first.

um, i've never done the swap. although i am almost sure you can. try a google search. what ever 205 t case you find, make sure it is a chevy. a chevy should bolt to a chevy. not all 205's were used in chevys, therefore they are not all the same. the linkage might also be different. also, some used a slip yoke drive shaft while others did not. different output and input shafts are also out there. so, one case might be a direct bolt on while another 205 might not.

if i were trying to do that swap i would find a good pick a part junk yard and just grab every part off of a truck w/ a 205. grab the case, linkage, and shifter. with that, it should work.

Yeah, I hate to burst the bolt in bubble, but it's not direct. You'll need another adapter, different shifter, and different driveshafts. Not to mention locking hubs (unless you've already got 'em).

Pretty decent little article there, it about sums it up. I agree though, don't sell the first truck. Who knows, maybe you'll come across a donor truck a month or two down the road with all the stuff on it you'd have needed.
