What to look for in an old Chevy?

Hi everyone -

I've been wanting to get a SFA Chevy for quite a while now, and I think I'm about ready to start seriously looking. I'm hoping that ya'll can help me out a little bit with what to look for, and what to watch out for.

Are there any years in particular to stay away from? I would like to have a mid 80's model, but will not count out anything. Are there any that are particularly better than others?

When checking out a truck, what should I look for? I've heard a lot about stress cracks on the frame where the steering box mounts... is there any way to fix this problem if I find a truck that has it? What else should I look for?

How can I verify that the truck has a 350 in it, and not a 305? From what I understand, they are hard to differentiate by looks alone.

I am by no means a master mechanic, but I'm fairly handy. I've been tinkering with my Suzuki Samurai for years... now I want something with a V8 though. I'm not afraid of a project, but I like to keep them smaller scale.

Thanks for any tips you can give.

- Steve

Re: What to look for in an old Chevy?

Four Wheeler magazine had an excellent issue a few years back on this very topic that I keep handy for reference. I scanned the pages for you to review. They may be a little dark, but the are still legible. The article was from June '01.
