5-speed conversion

Has anyone here put a GM 5 speed in place of the 4 speed with a 205 transfer case? I have a 1981 K-10 350/4 speed and want to put in an overdrive transmission.

Re: 5-speed conversion

No, I don't want to spend $3500 getting a kit. If I wanted to do that I'd just go buy a late 80's truck and be done. I want to get a generic 5-speed out of a late 80's and install it in an early 80's.

Re: 5-speed conversion

I'm not sure if there is anyone on here with a 5-speed swapped in. Things that come to mind are switching over to a hydraulic clutch. Does the shifter come up in near the same spot? The transfer case crossmember will need to be relocated back further, the 5-speed has a longer housing than the 205. The speedometer is attached to the output shaft of the t-case, is the cable long enough to be moved back further? Umm...oh yeah, finding an adapter for the tranny -> t-case.

I remember a TH400 or TH700-R4 -> 4L80-E swap in a magazine, but nothing for manuals.

Oh, if you end up with an NV-4500, have the 5th (OD) gear nut issue fixed. That would be the recommended tranny; it's got a cast iron case like your existing SM-465, and can be had with a decent L gear.
