Do you have the stock automatically locking hubs, or aftermarket manually locking hubs?
It's not totally true that the shifters go "bad" they just get sticky from lack of use. If you were to get under the truck, spray a penetrating lubricant on the linkage, and work the shifter around, it might help things out. You shouldn't need to get western with it after you've loosened it up. Mine works great, but then again...my truck is probably the exception to most.
It's 21 years old and still has all of the paint left on the undercarriage. YES it has been used, 400,000 miles, many of which were in fields, the 4wd was used plenty. Used enough in fact that the stock auto hubs didn't dry up or wear out until the truck was parked for a few years in the mid 90s.
