I need to replace the front input bearing in my SM 465. I would like to hear from somebody that is familiar with this transmission. Do I need any special tools and where would be the best place to get the replacement bearing.
I don't know much about the SM465 but I would just have someone rebuild the whole thing for you. I am sure parts are still available. You have another option which is to install an NV4500 which gives you an overdrive but the first gear isn't as low. You could also go to the 6 speed NV5600. Of course the latter option is really expensive.
Buy a Timken bearing and race. Take pictures as you tear it apart so you have something to look at if you forget how to put it back together. I'd probably get a whole kit unless the reason the input bearing went bad was because the truck spent a lot of time idling or something. It's not that bad of a job.
