Tach installation with HEI

I just bought a 72 Chevy Suburban. It has the aftermarket factory looking tach in the instrument cluster (not hooked up). I pulled the dash out and hooked up wires to the connections. I found a location on the HEI distributor cap for the tach connection. I connected one wire there and the other to a ground. Nothing happened. I don't have a wiring diagram for the tach so I was guessing where the wires went. I switched the wires around and this time it killed the engine.

What am I doing wrong? The engine is a V8 and the tach is set for a 8 cylinders.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Tach installation with HEI

I'm thinking you need to give the tach a 12v source, maybe one wire goes to the distibutor and the other to a power source. or maybe the tach is junk and thats why it was unhooked.
