6.2 diesel hard start???

My buddy just picked up a 3/4 Ton 83 van with a 6.2 diesel. He mentioned it has a starting problem. Starts easy when it's warm, hard when it's cold.

When we were talking about it this morning, I mentioned if he tried starting fluid (I'm not a fan of starting fluid). He said there was an empty can in the back (it was a work van so it has lots of trash he has not cleaned up from the previous owner), but it didn't register at the time as he has started it easy 3 times since he bought it..

So other than the glow plug (which the dash light does come on and go off), what do you look for on a diesel? Where are the glow plugs? Is there 1 for each cylinder?

I would replace the glow plugs, just because the light comes on doesn't mean anybody is home....er that they are working rather, maybe some are working but not all off them. They are simple to change and are the worst problem I have heard of with the 6.2 GM.
