leaf spring altering ???

ok, i bought the wrong leaf springs (4" superlift ez-rides)
for my sas, they have 5 leafs and have a spring rate of 560,
way to stiff for my liking, i see that tough countrys are
3 leafs and are rated at 295, can i remove 1 or 2 bottom
leafs to soften it up, or is this a bad idea, there is
some room for my truck to sag also so thats not to much of
a concern, then later on when i add a big block and winch
ill just put the leafs back in, whats your opinion on this
idea, i dont want to buy another set of springs if i can
help it, thanks,

Re: leaf spring altering ???

I removed some of mine - the PO put cement truck springs on it - at least it felt like it.

Called Leaf Spring Supply - great guys, they said you can remove the third leaf down from the top - don't remove the second leaf, it'll bend the top leaf. And you can take out the 4th down too.
Removing the short bottom one won't do much except cause breakage.

And - you can put the Teflon shims between the leaves, helps soften it.

And - you can grind a slight taper on the ends too - hard to describe - go to a spring maker and look how they do it - makes them more progressive.

Use greasable shackles too - makes a big difference as well.

Stay away from Poly bushings - too stiff and don't last long - dirt tears them up - the makers say different - but their tests are in the street - they lie about it.

Re: leaf spring altering ???

Common practice here is to take the third from top leaf out and put teflon sheet between each leaf. A 50' roll is like $20something. If you take the second leaf out you risk ruining your main leaf and if you take the bottom leaf out of a front set of springs you can end up with wrap and also ruining your springs because of stress concentrations.

Also, don't overtighten the shackle and spring eye bolts.
