won\'t get spark

I have a 1987 Chevy 3/4 ton 4 X 4, 350, 5.7 liter throttle body, manual tranny. It won't get spark when I drive it enough to get it warmed up. It will turn over. It gets gas. But there is no spark. I've changed the coil, distributor, alternator, battery is good, checked all electrical connections. But it still won't spark. Sometimes out of the blue, it will start right up when it's hot. Does anyone know or can help me figure this out? Also has anyone heard of an MSD 6AL go bad? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: won\'t get spark

ignition module in the distributor controls fuel and spark, i side of the module can be bad and the other still work correctly.

Re: won\'t get spark

The module inside the distributor only controls spark, not fuel.

Next time it won't start, check to make sure you have +12 volts to the Batt terminal on the distributor - without that it cannot run.

Disconnect EST if equipped, that's the brown wire you disconnect to set base timing - see the underhood label. If it runs with it disconnected, but not connected, trace that wire back to the ECM. If it's OK, replace ECM.
