transmission slipping

'80 3/4ton custom deluxe
will drive in reverse, but slips in forward gears. trand fluid looks and smells fine (ie. not burnt or black)... any suggestions? Would driving without the trans fluid dipstick cause this or anything else to go wrong?

thanks

kip

Re: transmission slipping

maybe its time for a replacement, its daysare probably over, sad to say. I've had an 80 before, just a 1/2 2wd and i had the replace the tranny twice. once bcause the first "original one was shot" and the 2nd because....i broke it haha... but i sold it then

Re: transmission slipping

Without the dipstick or without the whole dipstick tube? If the tube was out the tranny wouldn't hold enough fluid to work properly and would start burning parts up...

If your low on fluid it will be slipping, hows the fluid level?

Re: transmission slipping

The transmition was fine until I put fluid in it. I drove maybe 10 miles without the dip stick and it went all at once. did'nt burn the fluid or heat up at all.
