New Guy NEEDS help

So here's the story...
Just purchased a 89 GMC Suburban yesterday, right now it's lifted 4" and has a 14 bolt 9.5" rear and stock(?) front.
I haven't bought tires for it yet and I want to get this resolved before I do.
The rear is 8 lug and the front is 6...
Talking to a local shop they told me that if I upgrade the front I need to deal w/ stearing parts... (already I feel like I'm out of my league)
I was also told by them that there is a 14 bolt 6 lug rear
(this seams easier to me than switching the front)

I found a link on how to switch hubs/rotors/spindles on a dana 44 front (from 6 to 8) but i don't think that's what I have.

So going off the assumption that it's a GM 10 bolt front what can I do to have the same lug pattern all around.
Of course i'm trying to do this in the most ecnomical and easiest way.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

You can get 8 lug 10 bolt parts for your truck.

It's going to cost you about the same amount to go either way.

A 14SF didn't appear to come in 6lug in that generation. That means you'll end up running a 88-98 rear axle which has 14mm lugnuts (instead of 7/16") and moving the perches and hangers.

You can get the parts to convert the front to 8 lug. Pretty much all 3/4 tons and 3/4 ton Suburbans got those 10 bolt 8 lug fronts.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

Well thanks for the help
I ordered tires 2&2 (6 lug and 8 lug) yesterday. I'm just dying to get it on the road.
So down the road I'll beef up the front end but for now I get to put the Camaro away for the winter.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

First off Welcome!
Is the burban a 1/2 or a 3/4. Do you know what had been changed out? I am no expert on what came with what but what you have doesn't seem stock (Sorry for all the "whats"). I think that if you change out the front axle you will only have to replace minimal parts. If it is a 10 bolt you can (like Wrath said) get 8 lugs on there. You'll probaly want to keep what you have out back and only change the front axle if your needs demand it. Good luck and congrats on the purchase.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

I got a 1/2 ton suburban,
It's got a 3/4 ton 14 bolt rear on it
so yea i think I need to change over to a 3/4 ton front.
But the local shop guy said i don't want to do that.
so i'm gonna check into it and run w/ 2 different wheels through the winter

What would you all recomend for a good front end on this truck

and thanks for the welcome, I'm Mike too.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

I too, have an 89 Suburban 1/2 ton, 10 bolts front and rear.
If you already have 3/4 ton running gear in the back, I'd switch out the front to match.
You could probably find a donor at a junkyard and get all the steering parts, etc.. that you would need.
Also, if they're different now, chances are they have a different ratio. DON'T run in 4wd on hard roads, you will damage something.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

The rear and front are 3:73 both the same...

And I'm in Toledo, OH that's a hell of a distance to send an axle so I'm keeping my eyes open around here.

So I'm lookin for a donor 3/4 ton,
thanks for all the help guys.

Re: New Guy NEEDS help

Well i just wanted to say thanks for the help and to show off the ride.
It's sitting on 6 and 8 lugs but I'll fix that later

Anybody near NW Ohio that wants to "go out and play" let me know.
