283 timing

I have a 283 I put in a [img]images/graemlins/AR15firing.gif[/img]jeep.
It's supposed to be a 1965 but not sure.It has a torker 2 intake and a holley 600.I called edelbrock and they told me the timing was supposed to be set on 36 degree's?Please help me I have it set at 8 degree's advanced and it runs like [img]images/graemlins/puke.gif[/img]. thnks

The 36 degrees is fully advanced. You set it at 8 degrees at idle with the vacuum line off. If you hook the vacuum up and rev the motor to about 2500 rpm it should be around 36 degrees total advance.

Make sure when hooking up the vacuum line it doesn't make
any difference at idle, but does at higher RPM.

The distributor needs PORTED vacuum, that's near 0 at idle
and gets stronger as it revs up.

Manifold vacuum is strong at idle - wrong type.
Makes a huge difference in how it runs.
