NP203 or NP205?

I have a 203 out of my bros 78 that was bolted to a Th350(junk transmission, laying behind the barn for any parts needed) and a 205 bolted to my SM465. I have the option of using the 203 or keeping the 205 setup, what is more desireable for a mud-only truck? I know they are both very strong but have not used either... any input greatly appreciated!

The 205 is waaaayy stronger than the 203, I would go with that.

Cool, thanks. What is a 203 worth, if I were to put it on ebay? Shifter included...

Re: NP203 or NP205?

i paid $50 for a replacement 203 from my truck. I know the 205 is stronger, due to being a gear drive instead of a chain drive, but i don't know about "waaaayy" stronger.

Re: NP203 or NP205?

The NP205 isn't a whole lot stronger. Like 20%. We aren't talking something out of a 40 year old Jeep vs a NP205 here. Main advantage of the 205 is the gear drive, but the relatively high low range of 1.96:1 means you can actually run it in Low in the mud and not just creep along.

I don't do mud, so a NP205 would get one of the new 3:1 gear kits for me.

the reason i like 205 so much is that it can be converted to twin stick, its a FWD, RWD and 4WD truck!!! and like they said, it takes a likin and keeps on tikin.

Re: NP203 or NP205?

Take the 4 speed and 205 for sure. autos get hot in mud, 205 is a better t-case, and you will really notice the gearing difference. Autos are OK in mud but only with a hopped up motor and stall converter. If your motor is basically stock, you will still be able to spin a decent size tire with the gearing of the 4-speed. 1st gear-6.55 2nd-3.57 and third- 1.57. Even the lowest autos are geared 3.0 or higher in Low.
