Split between two trucks, maybe buy both?

The 78 or 77 1/2 ton I described last week (350, SM465, 205) is probably going to be purchased this week for 300, selling the 350 for 175 and a oil-burning 305.

I found a 85-87-ISH 3/4 ton Pickup, nice body(350, TH350, 203) I don't know how it runs but my buddy said they are asking 200 OBO.

My plans for the 1/2 ton until I get my rearend in my Propane Burner is swap the 305 in and mount my 36s on some 15x8 6 lugs, cut the fenders and stuff them for snow then when my Propane Burner is done, put the sm465 and 205 in that. Eventually I will part out the axles/frame... If I get the 3/4 ton, It will probably stay stock for a long time, but I need to hear it run first.

I could get the 1/2 ton, Swap the 350 out and buy the 3/4 ton, but what do you guys think? Two trucks for 300?

Any input? The 1/2 ton has a set of winter tires in great condition for my 81 Delta 88 also. Both trucks have very good tires on them.

2 trucks for $300 is a pretty good deal, especially if they have good parts. I'd run the 3/4 ton being as it would be stronger anbd maybe use parts to combine them.

Well I will probably keep the 3/4 ton stock because its so nice I dont want to beat it up and the 1/2 ton would be just to hold me over until my Blazer has the rear springs/shackles and axle in place.

the older 70s truck might be 3.73s or something but in the 80s they started going to higher gears so possibly 3.08 3.23s but if 3/4 ton might be lower, there really is no set in stone answer to that.

Well I bought the 1/2 ton tonight, will deliver it tomarrow and check out the 3/4 ton a bit better. He said in granny, 4low he can be at idle and dump the clutch and it doesn't stall. I can't wait to get those 36s mounted up!

Good score man. 2 trucks that run and have all kinds of goodies for under $500 is a steal!

Just my opinion, but if it has a carbed 350, SM465, stockish sized tires, and he says it won't stall when you dump it into first, that says low gears to me. I'd bet 3.73's or 4.10's. No way to be sure without looking at the glove box codes or cracking the diff though.

Re: Split between two trucks, maybe buy both?

Well the 3/4 ton was too good to be true, it was 600 and ran like crap but for another 400 it included new super swampers (I dont have that money anyways)... So I got the 1/2 ton, played around a bit until I broke something in the clutch (I think the fingers on the pressure plate broke) went wrong so you start it in gear or out of gear but cannot shift! I am pulling the engine and selling it for 175+a 305 CI out of his 85 so while the engine's out I am gonna look around at the clutch and probably replace that. The money that I get from this job is now going to a 68 Beetle project car that i'm getting (I want to add to my VW family, I have a jetta and have had another jetta and golf)... Maybe a baja bug in the making...
