Help! Front hubs must come off.

72 Blazer

I am replacing the u-joints at the end of the front axle half-shafts. When I took the wheel off 4 of the 6 lug bolts broke off so now I must remove the hub to replace the bolts. I have never done this on a 4wd and need help. When I take the lock cover off all I see is a c-clip but there are no nuts.

Re: Help! Front hubs must come off.

Are you talking about a c-clip holding the actual wheel hub on the spindle or holding the locking hub parts in place? There should be a nut holding the hub on with 4 or 6 slots or something in it, you have to have a special socket that fits it. Autozone has them, just tell them what type of axle you have. Also, pick up a chiltons manual while your there, has good diagrams on all this stuff...

Re: Help! Front hubs must come off.

Sounds like you removed the dial assembly on your lockout with the 6 little allen screws, right? ok, now there sohould be a big c-clip that holds in the main portion of the lockout assembly and a smaller one on the axle stub. take these off and the rest of the lockout assembly should slide out. Now you will see the spindle nut-Not a 6 poit nut, but one with 4 indents. You can get the 4-point socket for this nut from the parts store (explain what you are doing to them, they will know what you need), pull off the two 4 point nuts, remove the hub, and pound out the bad studs. Brakes will need to be removed at some time in the process too to get off the hub assembly. with the hub off, remove the 6 nuts to get the spindle off, and you should be able to pull out your axle shafts.

Re: Help! Front hubs must come off.

Thank you I think I found the c-clip I was missing. I didn't fint the big c-clip at first but after wiping some grease away I was able to find it. I have the socket now so here goes.
