Homemade Bed Extenders/Cargo Holders?

I'm not able to afford a tubular bed extender that also holds cargo against the tailgate when flipped around.

Anyone have any suggestions about a homemade one?

Thanks!

<font color="green"> Not unless you have a tubing bender handy. Bungee cords and ratchet straps is all I generally use.

Also, if you have something that you feel needs to be posted on both of the Chevy boards, odds are

how nice looking and how heavy duty do yu want it. Probably wouldn't be too hard to make it out of 1" tubing or square tubing and instead of bending the corners cut them at 45* then weld them together to make the corners the run a couple straps along it to keep the 2 or 3 or however many bars you make otgether then on the ends put some plate and in the middle make a hinge of sorts. If I were any good at CAD I would try to make one. Maybe next year

Re: Homemade Bed Extenders/Cargo Holders?

to hold stuff against the tailgate, just use a couple telescopic shower rods. as for the bed extender, what are you trying to do exactly? are you just trying to put a 4wheeler in a 6ft bed with toolbox, or trying to keep small stuff in the bed or what? you could probably build one out of aluminum tubing without even owning a bender, since it wouldnt have to be very strong tubing. if you want it to look really nice, either buy a bender or hit up the junkyard for a late model truck with a crushed bed, you should be able to get that doohickey pretty cheap. do they come in fullsize trucks? only thing i've physically seen them in is the Exploder SportTrac. good luck, be creative.

Uh, just build a copy of the one you've seen.
Just keep your mind open when it comes to materials,
anything from wood to tubing to square stock could
be used.

Re: Homemade Bed Extenders/Cargo Holders?

Next time buy a longbox standard cab instead of a shortbox extended cab. hehe.

I use a load bar in my truck to keep things from moving around. Mine's one from a truck driver that got bent. I cut it shorter so it'd work in my truck (instead of a trailer) which also happened to get rid of the bent part. I've seen some home-made "bed extender" look-alikes and they looked better than the real deal. Use your imagination. I've seen box steel ones and ones made out of oval aluminum.
