how do you swap an axle?

how do you swap an axle, ive never done this before, and my 10 bolt with a gov-loc is beyond rebuilding, im just gunna see if i can find another 10 bolt with 3.73's 5 or 6 lug and swap it in, and if it is a 5 lug i will take the axles and brake parts and put them in the new diff, and go from there, any help would be greatly appreciated, btw i wanna do this practicly (keep it 1\2 ton) not put 1 ton stuff under it because that would cost me an arm and a leg and take waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy to long, because this thing is my daily driver, and i have to get it done so i can drive it again.

Re: how do you swap an axle?

step one: jack up truck
step two: put jackstands under frame
step three: take off tires
step four: unhook brake lines and diff breather hose
step five:take off u-bolts, with axle sitting on jack
step six: switchs the axles
step seven repeat steps five through one in reverse order

( did i get it right guys? )

Aren't the U-bolts one-time-use?

Re: how do you swap an axle?

yeap this is all good and fine, but i dont have anyone to take me to a salvage yard, my dad is always working, 10:30am-8pm, my mom just wont, my friends are working, it just sucks, my only other option is to get an open carrier for my 10 bolt and reuse my gears i have and just put new bearings in it, reuse the gears, and shim it. id have to tow it to a shop and have them professionlaly install it. it really sucks when this happens, im never [bleep] around with another gov-loc again. Re: how do you swap an axle?

Bleed the brakes.

An oil change in the diff while your there wouldnt hurt. If you get it from a yard chances are its been drained and has no oil to begin w/.

Do the brakes or swap on yours that you know are good.

HEHE Too bad you dont need a 3.08. I have the one I just took out of my Blazer last week, (to install a 14FF) and my inlaws go to Il. frequently.
