Tilt hood articles?

A buddy just bought a '80 Chevy shortbox. Saw a Ford the other day that had a hood flip sone so the hood and fenders fold forward like in the picture. Anyone know of an more pics or articles on how this is done? See how easisy and accessible the motor is to work on then? Thanks

Re: Tilt hood articles?

I don't think it neccesarily makes it easier to work on. Maybe if the hoow still worked it would give you the best of both situations. I am not sure if you can make the hood still work since the hingers are attached to the fender part that does not move. I also think that it would be a pain off road cause I am sure that thing rattles and shakes a lot.

Re: Tilt hood articles?

Ya that pics is of one on eBay. There was an older 70s-ish for 250 for sale here a bit ago they built the tilt hood and the moor was so accesible. It was retty cool and something different not many people have. For a motor swap just pull the hinge pins and the whole thing could come off and make tons or room. I thought I read an artocle a long long time ago on this but I can't find it anywhere.
I bet it probably would ratle some. That Ford had bump stops then like Jeep latches on teh side on teh fenders to hold it. I think I would also build anoth latch in the middle that pops from the cab

Re: Tilt hood articles?

I have seen a guy at car shows with like a 78 chevy with a flip up hood. Some major mods done to make it work the way it did, but his hood functioned like a regular hood only he had hinges on the top of the hood for the hood to work, and he had a rod to hold it open no springs. When his whole front section folded forward most of the fender went with it. He also had two wires on retracting wheels to hold it so it didn't go too far forward. Another thing was 4 hood latches like you find on Rigs, 2 mounted on each side on the inner fender. I didn't get to speak to the guy (poor guy had a 6 cylinder anyway but I would guess there were some significant modifications to strengthen the inner fender to hold the hood like that. Also the regular hood was pinned. I looked into it as much I could without actually messing with anything so outside of what I could see I really dunno. That is something I would really like to do though.

I think these hoods look cool and I think it would make it esier to access hard to reach engine places.

Re: Tilt hood articles?

I was looking around the web for an SS style hood for my truck and I found this place called US body works. They have the complete kit for a tilt hood, and they show you how to sit it up so that when it's up, you can just slide it to the side and the whole thing comes right off. I thought it was pretty cool, too, but I'm now sure of how good it would be for off-road, especially since it's fiberglass.

US Body Source parts are ok but be careful dealing with them.
