HEI Ignition

Do I have HEI Ignition on an 89 Jimmy with 350ci TBI? If not does anyone have a drawing of the order the spark plug wires are positioned on the distributor. I have a drawing but it is only for HEI systems, maybe its the same both ways, I don't know.

Yes its HEI
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, starting at the front driverside of the cap...your drawing is probably right

Re: HEI Ignition

Is that going clockwise, also can you be more specific on which terminal to start with. What happens if you mess it up? I guess it just won't start.

Re: HEI Ignition

all chevy v-8 distributors should be the same in my experience. 18436572/ clockwise with 1 in the vacinity of 5 o'clock. You should mark this with a reference point on your intake for #1 if you don't have it memorized. This will help when either pulling the distributor, or just changing plug wires. The firing order is probably cast into your intake manifold.

Re: HEI Ignition

What do you need to do? Firing order is always constant and the same in all chevy v 8 but if you really want you could have the rotor pointing just about any direction for #1(most of the time the rotor will point at the #1 cylinder)........did you just yank your distributor and want to plop another in or do you just need to run wires?

Re: HEI Ignition

Yes I just pulled of the distributor to get to the computer wires because I am rewiring my truck and I did't think to mark the wires. I am just trying to figure out where #1 goes and just follow the firing order around clockwise from there

Re: HEI Ignition

If you put the #1 cylinder top dead center, the #1 plug wire will go to whatever terminal the rotor is pointing at. Depending on how your dist is set in it could be just about any position. If you get no hint of starting you may be out 180 deg. Just spin the cap half way around and try again. This is just an approximation to get you started in the right direction. If your timing marks line up on your main front pulley it should be pretty easy to find #1 TDC. If your junk is like my junk and everything is unmarked it could get fun, hehe. Good luck.

Re: HEI Ignition

Thanks, the way I figured it out (and I got lucky with it) was to have the old lady bump the starter while I had my finger over the #1 spark plug hole and when my finger got blown off she was ready to fire. Did it that way because I could't read the numbers on the pully
