Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

A dana 300 is a transfer case on a jeep. The front axle of your 76 will be either a dana 44 or a dana 60. I don't know where you got the idea you had a dana 300 for a front axle

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

yeah, D300 would be one mean axle, you got to be more specific, what kind of noise, under what conditions etc. the more info the better.

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

i have been told it cannot be a dana 300 but it really says that on the ring gear! anyway it pops most during a right turn. it is a full-time system and i intend to make it part time. i repacked all bearings and replaced seals, all looked ok. any ideas?

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

sounds like the steering joints or a u-joint on the front drive shaft if it pops on turns. My 86 made poping noises when my front u-joint was bad.

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

yea boy i tell you what, those wheel joints are not that hard to replace, its just the first two that are hard( lefta nd right side) once you do those the first time, everyother time, will be allright. i put gresable ones in when i replaced em.

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

im with 86diesel on this one, if its making noise when you have the wheels turned and moving, than im betting on front u joints,
if its popping only while your turning the wheel, not while your holding it turned then i would be looking for bad steering joints.

Re: DANA 300 NOISE!!

the numbers on the ring gear will be a numerical ratio to give you the gear ratio. If you look on the axle housing itself, you sill find a stamping that should say D44.
