busted trans?

Hey. excuse my utter lack of knowledge but maybe someonecan help... my buddy has an 84 c20(I think, it was converted to an eight lug, so i guess its a c10) short bed and hes got a prob w/ the auto. trans. The truck feels like the trans is slipping when it goes forward, but not reverse. So he figured it was the clutchlates or pressureplates or frictionplates or whatever, and he rebuilt the trans, and put in a manual throttle body. (it already had a shift kit or something)The problem: when he took the trans apart, the plates were so new and in tact that he could still read the numbers stamped on them. he put the ebuild kit in anyway and put the truck back together with a new torque converter in case that was the problem (since he was left clueless with the ok plates) and it still has the same roblem as before he rebuilt it. it just doesn have the bang whe it shifts that a turbo 400 trans should. please any ideas let me know. hes pretty frustrated, as you may well know from first hand, a trans rebuild is not a fun easy or quick task and to make itworse it is still broken!

<font color=green>Could be a bad torque converter too, did he change it when he rebuilt the tranny? I gott assume that he did since if he can rebuild trannies he must be pretty knowledgable... If he did then I have no idea what the problem is.

Re: busted trans?

If he rebuilt the whole thing right with deccent parts and he put a new torque converter in it maybe whoever put the shift kit in it screwed up? But you say he put a new manual throttle body....you mean new manual valvebody? I am leaning twards a f-ed up valvebody now.....what brand of converter did he put in it and how much stall(just a stock replacemnt?)? Does it have a slow shift or just slips alot when in gear like he has a high stall converter?

Re: busted trans?

the reason I say messed up valvebody is because if it slipps and the shifts are sluggish it sounds like there is an internal pressure leak. Might be in the trany case too....

Re: busted trans?

i rebulid converters for a living and a converter cannot tell whether the trans is in drive or reverse. I think you can go ahead and rule that part of it out.

<font color=green>That shows what I know about autos. I gotta stop responding to these questions... This is why I like my manual tranny vehicles - no magic, all gears, shafts, and bearings. Well, and a clutch, but if that's slipping then you can tell in a hurry. Anyways, I'm off topic...

Re: busted trans?

Hey guy's this sounds like my "I just rebuilt my tranny and it still don't work" experience.

Did he replace the pump as well? I don't think it would know the diff between forward and reverse either, but it might be the prob.

Re: busted trans?

yes, i meant manual valvebody. it isnt likely that the shift kit was installed wong, because the trans was working fine wen he got the truck with the shift kit already in it.
i wll run all this by him, thanks a bunch but if anyone has more ideas they are alway welcome!
