Caddy 350 w/ Chevy TH400???

How tough is it to match the bellhousings? I need cheap motivation for a CUCV I just bought and other than the Caddy I can only find Camero 305s. I'm in Hawaii and used 454s aren't around. I might have a lead on an Olds 400, how easy is it to mate the TH400 to an Olds?

Thanks,
Bryan

Should be able to do it by using the BOP bellhousing, but the clutch and pilot bushing may be different too... There's a dude in here that uses a Caddy engine, he'll clear it up.

it is an auto, therefore no clutch or pilot bushung/bearing. If you get the tranny housing for a Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Caddy it you can swap the insides of the trannies and be on your way. I know some Caddy engines never came with a manual and they didn't put the hole in the crank for one so that swap would take much more effort.

I haven't looked at the TH400 (still in truck, it's not here). Is it just a bellhousing swap or do you actually have to swap out the internals from the case?

Thanks,

Bryan

D'oh! Note to self - Autos don't have clutches or pilot bushings. Apparantly I have manual trannies on the brain. That's what I get for making posts late at night.

Re: Caddy 350 w/ Chevy TH400???

Actually shouldn't be hard at all... the CUCVs are diesels and the old GM diesels and BOP engines share the same bellhousing bolt patterns... Key words are "shouldn't be". I know the BOP engines can be mated to the diesel trannies, my older brother had an early 80s GMC diesel that he swapped an Olds 455 into. You wanna talk about gas guzzler? And boatloads of power to boot.

he bellhousings are part of the case. Not seperable like a manual. You would need the entire case from a BOP(buick/olds/pontiac) TH400 and then swap the enternals from one to the other. The 6.2 diesel has a chevy belhousing bolt pattern and WILL NOT bolt to Caddy or Pontiac.

I second that! The only engine that came in a Chevy/GMC truck that had the BOP bolt pattern, Is the old 350 diesel. Which was a oldsmobile 350 converted to diesel. If you ever find one of those ol' 350 diesels, STAY AWAY!! There is a reason they only used them a few years. (79-81 IIRC)

Re: Caddy 350 w/ Chevy TH400???

Desertrat67 hit the nail on the head....
It's easier to just swap the internals from the Chevy TH400 to the BOPTH400. If your chevy TH400 is toast and your BOPTH400 is in good shape you can tear it down and swap in the chevy th400 tailshaft.

Re: Caddy 350 w/ Chevy TH400???

Thanks for the help. This actually helped me decided to keep the diesel. Once I'm back on the mainland I'll decide whether to swap out again. Not a lot of options here. I'll keep looking for a Caddy 500.....
