454BB starter trouble

I'm a guy from Denmark who happens to love American cars. I own a 1976 Jeep CJ5, in which I have swapped a 454BB Chevy engine. I have some trouble with my starter. When I put on a new starter and tries to fire it up, it grinds! After about 20 starts or so, the ring gear on the starter is trash. Could it be the flywheel, that's causing me trouble? I have to shim the starter, when I put it on, even though it is brand new. Do Chevy use different sizes in flywheels? I'm thinking diameter here. Please help me, I wanna hear my 454 as soon as possible....nothing beats the sound of an american V8

Chevy uses two different teeth counts on their flyheels, so you might want to check and see if your starter will sork with tyour flywheel. I think it is 158 and 163 teeth, but i could be wrong. someone else help on this one. Also, GM uses shims to space the starter the proper distance from the flywheel. When you buy a starter in the states it comes with a kit with different sized probes to place between the starter gear and flywheel. depending on which size probe you use determines the thickness of the shim you use. Hope this helps.

You might want to check that the ring gear is on the right side of the flywheel since Chevy switched from putting in towards or away from the engine at some time. Sorry if this is vague, but I remember switching a ring gear for a guy with a 454 in a boat because it was on the wrong side. Just something to look at and you don't have to buy new parts if this is a problem, just need a torch.

you just descrieed a comen problem of your starter needing to be shimmed. only on boats is the starter backwords.
you just need to get a shim kit, good look.
