Ford 2.3L distributor not fitting engine

This is on a boat. Its got a 2.3, and needed a new distributor gear. new gear is identical to old one, and fits in distributor hole fine when by itself. The probalem is, the distributor won't slide down all the way. There is about an inch to go. The oil pump shaft has a hex top, and the distributor is supposed to slide onto it, just like on a GM. It doesn't seem to want to though. We can turn the engine over by hand, and it doesn't help. the distributor turns, but doesn't engage the oil pump shaft, which we didn't touch...anyone ever have this problem? We've even tried straightening the shaft by sticking pieces of paper in next to it to hold it up, still nothing...any ideas? Thanks

Also, can I remove to oil pump shaft from the top of the engine? In other words, without taking the pan off? Thanks

Alot of the time when you pull a distributor out the oil pump drive shaft will turn some. So use s flash light and look down to see where it then line it up drop it in and hope it works.

<font face="Times New Roman">
<font color=green>What you need is a BFH. 3 pound ought to do it. Funny thing is, one of my friends actually did that to the 351 in his Cougar in high school. We still give him a hard time about that.

We think the shaft might have some out a little bit when we pulled the distributor. If we take the gear off, it still won't go down all the way.
