14 bolt question

It s been awhile since beeing here, but here is my question. On a 14 bolt, do the bearings in the hub need to be packed with grease or does the gear oil lub them? and if I do have to repack them can someone tell me how to get the outer bearing out with out killing my hand?

thanks,
Mike

Re: 14 bolt question

Don't pack them, they're lubricated by the gear oil from the diff. FYI - the outer bearing is in with a snap ring retainer that must be removed first, then the bearing and race must be knocked out the inboard/wheel seal side.

Re: 14 bolt question

dito. Just don't overtighten them. A friend F-250 full floater rear he tighted bearing too tight and we were up on the mountain and the retainers burned and the wheel and axles came out of the housiong and was sticking out like 2 feet from the truck. Really sucked, we were supposed to work and get liek $10 hour for easy stuff plus get paid for driving time and gas to get up there but instead we spent the whole day trying to fix it. Even spilled 5 gallons of 90wt oit in the bed of my pickup. The smell..... whew!
