What tranny would it have?

What auto tranny would a 78 3/4 ton suburban with 454 have? It has a 14 bolt FF, I can see the hubs in the pics. Would that be a TH400?

99% chance. Most everything with a 454 had a turbo 400 behind it, especially if it had the potential to tow something behind it.

Re: What tranny would it have?

Ok, I found the burban about 50 minutes from here for 200 bucks and it has a 14 bolt ff rear, poss. th400, and a 454. I'm going to pick it up and take the 454 and give it a nice rebuild and use it as a preliminary willys engine for mock-up and such. Gonna use the tranny, if a th400, in the camaro probably. The rear I'll probably sell to someone.

Re: What tranny would it have?

[censored] yeah. the 454 is worth $600 even if it needs everything under the sun done to it.

turbo 400s are pretty common where i'm from. i've got two sitting in the back of my 77C20 and my dad has a couple in the barn. i don't have a clue what they go for.

if you make the 14FF all pretty like you can probably sell it to someone for enough to pay for the 'burb.

Re: What tranny would it have?

Yeah, I'm sure it's fine, the truck has been sitting for 12 years he said. So I would think the rear end shouldn't be toast. I'll clean it up and paint it. And yes, I can't believe the deal for the engine. I was going to offer him 400 for the engine alone if I come and pull it, but I decided to ask what he wanted for the whole thing first, he said 200 I was like DEAL! But it's been a few days so I'm not sure yet if he still has it. I sent him an email a few minutes ago. We shall see.

Don't happen to know if that year 454 would be a 4 bolt main do ya?

Re: What tranny would it have?

It's a 50/50 chance that it could be. If I had to guess, it'd be a 2 bolt. If it were a commercial 'burb then it'd probably have the 4 bolt.

I like to use http://www.nastyz28.com/bbcmenu.html when my book doesn't have it listed.

I've been wanting a bigblock so bad. I have been looking for them just like I've been looking for a SBC400.

Re: What tranny would it have?

Yep, I've been looking for about 2 years now. Cheapest I could find was around 400 for a complete one but it needed to be sleeved and still wasn't guaranteed it could be rebuilt. This guy says it was rebuilt about 5k miles before it was stored so, hopefully just some machining and basic master kit will take care of it.

Re: What tranny would it have?

How the heck do you find these incredible deals though? I have people offering me junk 305/350s for $400. I'm jealous.

As far as I'm concerned, anything that needs to be resleeved is only worth its weight in scrap.
