Swap TH350-NP203 for 700R4-NP205

Wondering if its even possible and what headaches would be involved in the switch. I know the 700 is a little longer than the 350 and i believe the 205 is signifigantly shorter than the 203(hmmm wonder if the math works out lol) I want a tranny with overdrive... and getting rid of the full time would be nice. I know you can buy a kit to convert it but why not upgrade to a gear drive tcase if you have everything out anyway.

Yes it can be done, I'm doing it right now to my 73'. You have to get the TH350 version of the NP205 and adapter. The 4 wheel drive version of the 700r4 has the same diameter and spline count for the output shaft as the TH350 but it is like 2" longer. I've heard of guys building or machining a spacer but I went with an advance adapter output shaft that is the proper length. I also bought a 89' two wheel drive core out of a van which has the proper bosses for the aluminum dust cover.

Re: Swap TH350-NP203 for 700R4-NP205

Didn't NP205s come stock behind TH350s? When you say adapter do you mean an aftermarket adapter or something from the factory? I found a NP205 in my area that the guy says came from behind a TH400. I understood that most trucks with a TH400 ie 3/4 and 1/ton trucks were all full-time 4 wheel drive? Didn't make much sense to me.

Hope you guys can enlighten me

<font face="Times New Roman">
<font color=green>205s did come behind 350s sometimes, but not very often. IN '80 all TH350s had a 205, other than that they're few and far between. I think '72 had some as well.

Tavis, for your information the 205 to turbo400 adapter is a much sought after unit. As is the 205 that came behind that 400 due to the hig spline count.. I believe it is also the 205 with the correct input shaft for the ORD doubler..

If it was cheap you could make a buck or two off it.
