out of gas w/ half tank

last night on my way home from a 90 mile drive about 6 miles from home the truck started chugging like it was out of fuel. I had 1/2 tank on the left side which was what I was running on the right tank was basically empty. I hit the switch to go to right to see and it fired up again and I got a few more mile then it ran out of gas. I tried to switch back to the left but she wouldn't start. Dad came with the farm truck and put some in teh right tank and I got home. This AM on my way to twn I flipped it to the left tank and drive to town and probably have drving 20 miles on that tank w/o problem now. ANy ideas? Selector selinoid? Thanks

Re: out of gas w/ half tank

When I first got my 80 I put like $30 buck worth of gas into the left tank. This was during gulf war gas was $$$. I drove all night on that. Did a lot of cruising. Truck started to get hard to start then would not start at all. Could not understand I had plenty of fuel it still read full. Come to find out that when I would flip the switch to switch tanks the gauge would switch which one it was reading but the tanks never switched. I was still runnning off the $10 I had in the other tank. This happened a few times. I actually did it 3 times. First time a think the soleniod was the problem. 2nd and 3rd time a fuse had blown. Pain in the [censored] to figure out. I can't remember which fuse it was or where. Just start checking them. That might be the easiest fix. Then work your way to the solenoid.

oh the easiest fix might just be to put some gas in the other tank for now.

cool. The prob with putting gas in the other tank is that it leaks, and leaks bad. You can watch it leak and drip like every 5 seconds it drips.

Re: out of gas w/ half tank

well could be the pump itself going out...my guess would eb that either yor sending unit or your pick-up tube is the culprit. in either case you need access to the fuel pump. so either remove your bed, or drop the fuel tank and open it up. COULD be clogged pick-up screen. not likely though.

Re: out of gas w/ half tank

I don't think it is fuel pump or filter because it ran all day today but I don't know on which tank. I filled my left tank today and the gause shows full and switch is on left but I think I may still be running on the right tank. I guess I won't know till it runs out

Re: out of gas w/ half tank

I don't believe the fuel pump is in the tank like it is in our trucks.

Check the fuses it could be simple. I remember when I had my KC lights on and a fuse blew it took out my right tank switching everything to the left tank or vise versa I don't remember. The point being I never knew it until I started running out of gas while reading a full tank.

Re: out of gas w/ half tank

ya, the fule pump on is the motor. It works on teh left side sometimes. Like yesterday I ran on the left side and I could see the gauge dropping but last night on my way home it started chugging again so I switched the the right and it picked up so switched back and it chugged so then again switched back and drove home fine then this AM drove fine on teh left again
