Hummvee kits/replicas

Does anyone know know anything about the Bummer kits by Tatonka or Urban manufacturing? Here are the links to their pages.

I cam across an older issue of Four Wheeler magazine October 2000 has part 2 of Project Bummer. What these kits are is a fiberglass body you bolt on to a 73-87 trucks or 73-91 model Blazers or Suburbans. They look a lot like an actuall Hummer. The kits are a lot cheaper than a real one and you still get all the added features of a GM vehicle. I was just wondering if anyone has any information on these kits? I saw an add in the auto trader a few months back for actual USMC Hummvee's for $25,000. All the web sites I looked at said military Hummvees are not DOT approved and that they should have been cut into sections before leaving a military installation. These sites also said that they could be seized by the government if they were owned by individuals and it would be hard or impossible to register them if you actually got one and reassembled it due to the non-approval of the DOT. Any info on this?

I can't say much about the Bummer kits other than many people on here would consider it sacralige (sp?) to do something like that to a good looking truck. Now, if the body was all rotted to h*$l and falling off, then it would be acceptable.

The Humvee you saw was probably part of the couple hundred that the USMC traded to some construction company as partial payment for work they were doing on a Marine Base. That circumvented the ban on selling them. If it's one of those, it's totally legal, just make sure all the paperwork is there. There have been a few that "dissappeared", and later appeared in car lots, but those almost always ended up back in the possession of the government. Also, if you are interested in that real HMMWV in the Auto Trader, bear in mind that all the ones the USMC released to that company were in varying states of disrepair. Some just needed a whole vehicle tune up, others were all kinds of screwed up.

Don't worry I would never scrap a good body on a truck that was in good shape. The whole idea is to use a truck with a really crappy body. That way you can buy a really cheap truck and can actually afford the kit. Basic kit for the Bummer is $5,495 deluxe kit is $6,695.
I have seen a lot of people with 4x4 trucks sitting in the back of their property just rusting away. Most have either have blown engines, missing body panels or they just let them sit. The problem is most of the people think they have a one of a kind item or they are saving it to do a restoration, LOL. I have seen trucks sit there for 10 years and never move. Instead of letting it sit why not make some money and sell them. I have tried this line if questioning sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I know where there is a 73 Impalla with a complete factory 454 its been sitting for at least 7 years an the guy wants $750 for it. I tried to get him down a little. He finally came down to $700 but that is more than I am willing to pay. I could use some of the parts for my 1974 Z28 big block swap. I will keep saving my money and keep waiting eventually I find the part or vehicle I am looking for, sometimes it just takes time.
Thanks for the info on the military hummvees, I would love to have one but $25,000 for a play toy is a little to much. Read my my signature and you will realize why I want a chevy 4x4. I love my little Nissan its totally reliable, has a V6, and its a heavy duty model but only 2wd. It just keeps going. At 155k on the mileage it uses no oil and runs great. Something to be said for taking care of a vehicle when you use it for daily transportaion and a little off roading too!
