thumping or clicking noise

I have a 98 Z71 and recently noticed a deep clicking or slight thumping noise that appears to only happen when driving around 30mph. It almost sounds like a rock stuck in the tread of a tire but I have checked them and no rocks. Also, it does appear to happen at other speeds or speed up or slow down unless because of wind noise or engine noise, I just can't hear it. Anyone else ever had a similar noise or have any suggestions on how to figure out what it is?

Had a 96 Z71 & was clicking like what you say & ended up being a U joint.$50.00 parts & labor @ a dealer.

Re: thumping or clicking noise

Was there any play in the u-joint that was noticeable while trying to shake it with your hands? Or, did it seem okay but the needle bearings worn?

It felt fine when I checked it & the noise went away as I went faster. At first I thought it was something in my rear end ,I got lucky. They say it is pretty normal especially when it's always wet(snow, boat launch, mud etc.)

Re: thumping or clicking noise

Should I go ahead and replace the joint on both ends of the drive shaft since I will have it part of the way off anyway?

Re: thumping or clicking noise

So do you guys think that the rattling/grinding noise coming from the rear of my truck could be a u-joint? I was going to replace the axle but I will be more than happy to replace the u-joints instead since theres a grand price difference. It happends at 30mph too.

Re: thumping or clicking noise

yeah willy,
since your truck resembles a late model chevy half-ton it would make sense that if the symptoms are the same the problems are the same...wait a minute. you're rig is nothing like that. i would sawp axles...or mayeb we can work out a trade. I"ll trade you 2..no make it 4 U-joints for those worthless old axles you have laying around.

Re: thumping or clicking noise

Hey now, sounds like a deal to me, not. Anyway, I am talking about my late model 1/2 ton pickup. You can have that 10 bolt thats in there if you give me a 5 lug 14 bolt But anyway, think it's the u-joints or the axle?
