Sqeeking in Drive, Not Reverse...

My brother-in-law is in the process of selling his 97 GMC Z-71 pickup to fix up his 89 Chevy 4x4. There is a sqeeking sound that seems to be coming from around midway under the truck. He wants to fix it for the guy buying it. He thought it was his u-joint so he replaced that but the sound still persists. I drove it last night and it seemed to only do it when going forward, but not in reverse. Any ideas, suggestions???

what kind of squeaking? does it increase with rpms? does it sound when going over bumps?

first i gues check all mounts you can find...tranny, tcase, body/cab mounts...check any accessories bolted on.

also, have him lube the zerk fittings and such. maybe a little grease is needed somewhere.

Re: Sqeeking in Drive, Not Reverse...

Does this happen when you start to accelerate? Mine makes this "honk" sort of noise from the rear/middle of the truck when I accelerate from a stop. Started doing it earlier this year. Not the tranny and the U-joints are firm. I think it may be the driveshaft moving in and out of the yoke as the suspensions shifts during the acceleration.

When you figure it out, could you tell me please?

Sorry, I doubt I'll ever know now. Some guy went to have it inspected today. I guess its his problem now...

Re: Sqeeking in Drive, Not Reverse...

It was more of a sqeeking noise and was very loud when going slow. Harder to hear at faster speeds. Seemed to go faster as you accelerated. My brother-in-law said he put it up on jackstands to get the tires spinning to hear it. It seems to be coming from the transfer case...oh well, he has his check in hand and no more worries. I think the guy ended up spending $575 to get it to pass inspection so I'm assuming they worked on whatever it was.
