found 86 1 ton

well, i found a truck that i would like to get. 86 1 ton chevy, 4x4, 4 speed. guy said it had a deisel but was replaced with a 350, and tranny was rebuilt. long box with topper, looks totally stock. body looks good from the pic he had. $3500 OBO... i want this truck, about 125,000 miles. that would have 4.10 gears right? so if i put, say 35s on there to drive it around, that would up my gas milage a bit??? so anyhow, would that be a good daily driver to eventually be turned into a trail rig? if so, then i need to sell both my s-10s, anyone interested

Re: found 86 1 ton

Because it was a Diesel doesn't nessisarilly mean that it will have 4:10 gears in it, I had one that had 3:23s in it right from the factory.I didn't buy it new so I don't know if it was specially ordered that way or not.

Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

Re: found 86 1 ton

Having been a diesel increases the odds that it has 4.10's but it certainly does not guarantee it.
35"s run nicely with 4.11's and a 4 speed
It is probably a carbed 350, fuel injection would have helped fuel mileage but it didn't come along until 87
still for $3K it sounds good, but you have to check it out in person, a picture usually doesn't show everything. look for rust.
Hey also it having been a diesel means it should have a big 4 row radiator!

Re: found 86 1 ton

would it having been a diesal mean that it doesn't have to conform to some of the emissions stuff??? im in michigan so at least for now they don't have to be checked...but just am wondering... the guy thinks it has either 4.10s or 4.56s but did they ever come with 4.56s from the factory??
thanks guys

Re: found 86 1 ton

Most of the 1 tons came with 4:56's from the factory.
And alot had a Detroit in them.
Look in the glove box for the code sheet and look up the codes.
That is a killer deal on a 1 ton. All of the ones I have seen that are that clean were around $8k

Re: found 86 1 ton

Actually 75% of 1tons came with 4:10's and a posi or an open diff in the rear. The only time you really find 4:56's stock with a detroit are in the military trucks.

Re: found 86 1 ton

You can also find 4.56's and detroits in the old Eaton axles they used pre 73.

But back to the post; looks like a really straight 1-ton and for what your going to get wiht that truck 3500 sounds like a good deal.

Re: found 86 1 ton

Man, that thing gives me hope for my next truck. I would love to get something like that, a good condition, stock, 3/4 or 1 ton Chevy/GMC pickup for a good price. I'm afraid of the rust monster since my first truck, a 1986 K5, was a POS. Drivers side floorboard was like one step from dropping me onto the road.
