4.3 Backfire

I have a bad backfire in Chevy 4.3 Did compression test (OK) New EGR valve. I have to advance timing to get to start. Bad timing gear?

Did this problem just come up or has it been around and just goten worse?
After doing a tuneup on my 89 I had replaced the plug wires and thought I had them right, wrong I had about half of the wires on the cab in the wrong spots, didnt want to start at all with maybe 3 cylinders firing when there suposed to.

just a thouhgt other than that I dont really know what you should check

16x8 bajas wrapped with 285 TXRs, T-BARS cranked to level, and minor trimming
