NV4500

Are all the trannys in full size trucks after '91 the NV4500? And, is this the tranny with the low 1st like the 465 and the overdrive?

Re: NV4500

NV4500 came out in '92 3/4tons and some 1/2 tons with tow packages.

you can find an nv4500 with a 1st of 6.34:1.

Re: NV4500

NV4500's come in 91-up heavy 3/4-tons and 1-tons - 8600lb GVW and over. The only exception I'm aware of is a lighter truck with a diesel.

The NV4500 has a low first gear like the SM465. 6.34:1 for 91-94. 5.61:1 for 95-up.

Re: NV4500

The heavy GVWR trucks used the 4500 starting in 93 or so. The 4500's built before 95 had a 6.34 1st, and the 95 and later trannies had a 5.61 1st gear. Most of the LD trucks had Getrag 4 and 5 speeds until 93, and the NV3500 starting in 94. They are basically the same tranny with different names and are all junk. Some light duty trucks (including the ones with HD towing packages) had the 4500, but thats a rare find. For more info on the 4500, check out Advance Adapters.

Re: NV4500

The NV3500 started in 93 replacing the Getrag. Both it and the Getrag have 5 speeds and an integral bellhousing. These two are the light-duty 5-speeds.

The 4-speed used up to and including 91 is an SM465, not a Getrag. CK models got the aluminum-topped version, RV models (like my truck) got the iron-topped version.

The NV4500 did in fact appear for the 91 model year - only in the CK series however.

Re: NV4500

How do the NV3500 and Getrag compare to the 4L60E?

Re: NV4500

The one (NV3500 and the Getrag) you have to push in a pedal and then shift gears with this stick coming out of the floor. The other you put your foot on the brake and then pull a lever on the steering colum down puting it into gear.

Anyway....sorry about that little joke. The Getrag is a manual trans and the 4L60E is an auto.

Re: NV4500

I know that I meant in strength and durability. (i.e. would I be better off beating on a NV3500/Getrag or on a 4L60E??)
