24v Diesel Air Intake

hello boy and girls... i got a question, but its about the cummins diesel...so bear with me, as i trust you folks more than i do any other board

anyway, i've been wondering what would happen if i removed the factory airbox and filter and clamped on a cone filter on the end of the hose instead(the one that runs from the airbox to the turbo). how would the truck react in terms of it getting more air? how would that affect the turbo spool up? its a '99 2500 diesel 4x4.

Your what is stuck?

Re: 24v Diesel Air Intake

You might lose some performance with the hot air comming in from the open filter. This could cause exhaust gasses to increase and kill power and possibly hurt your turbo. but doubt it would be that much of an increase.

Re: 24v Diesel Air Intake

i would tend to agree. the whole 'gimik' behind the FIP Kit is the cold air box that comes flush with the roof of the hood. Just something to consider unless the truck is always gonna be driving in colder weather (not much of that anywhere these days!).

Re: 24v Diesel Air Intake

Don't fergit the two HUGE differences between gasoline engines and diesel engines........diesel uses 26 times as much air, and has about twice the compression. Both of those issues dictate the necessary differences in the induction systems from one engine to the other. In diesels you are trying to achieve VOLUME and LOW TEMP so the turbo has at least a fighting chance to work right. A cone filter most likely has less square area than the intended factory filter, and as was mentioned, you would be inducting higher temperature air.

Re: 24v Diesel Air Intake

Hey Shorts, have you ever contacted Gale Banks engineering?
They do some wonderful stuff on the cummins engines and could probaly give you some help on how to get a little more power for a small price. My search is all messed up so i can't find the page for you. Anybody know how to change the search engine used by your browser? I like MSN, but have some other shatty search engine that doesn't find anything but advertisements.

I'm not sure how to change the default search your browser uses, but you could just open a new browser window and type www.google.com or click here http://www.google.com for a good, fast search engine...</font>
