transmission swap?
Heyas,
I currently have an 82 suburban 6.2 diesel 4x4 with 400 tranny. I was wondering if a 700r tranny from an 89 suburban 350 gas 2wd will fit? I have never done a tranny so I am not sure what sort of connection differences there might be. The guy that has the tranny says there is probably a kit I can get to make it work. I am sort of questionable about the whole deal anyways, since its only $75. Should I just stick with trying to find a 400? Thanks for any info |
Re: transmission swap?
Well I'm guessing that the 400 is blown out? The 2WD 700 whould work if you got a new tailhousing too hook it up too your t-case, I think you whould have too move the crossmember too, However 6.2's like too eat 700's alive depending upon how you build them, How well you take care of them, Weather or not you have a tranny cooler etc etc. I whould just rebuild the 400 or get a new one myself, It's a much stronger tranny than the 700, And unless you do a lot of highway driveing you don't really need the overdrive gear of the 700 anyway.
Hope this helps. Yodas Day Off http://bbs.off-road.com/wwwthreads_u...odasdayoff.art |
Re: transmission swap?
Stick with the 400!! 700 will die a horrible death under the torque of the diesel and once you get it hot, that 700 is done for. 400 is inexpensive to rebuild and will last. 75.00 for a 700 means its burned up and good for a 900.00 rebuild.

Re: transmission swap?
The 400 is dead again. I just had it rebuilt a
while ago and its been giving me problems ever since. Like it wouldn't shift at the right time and what not. I am not sure what the deal was but I just hooked up to my boat and the tranny died on me. The guy that rebuilt it said he would give me a refund so hopefully that will work out. I am not sure if the guy just didn't do it right or if the tranny is non-rebuildable so I want to get a different one. I guess I will just try to get a 400 from the junk yard. You guys don't seem to like the 700 idea very much :) I probably need to get a tranny jack as well since its probably pretty heavy. |
Re: transmission swap?
the 700r is a computer controlled tranny....if your burban is not, then it you can't just drop one in.

Re: transmission swap?
Keep the 400! The 700 can't handle the torque of the diesel like the 400 can. The 700 will need an adapter kit along with a different output shaft to match the transfer case. This stuff will cost much more than it would to have a good shop rebuild the 400. The 400 doesn't have the low first gear and overdrive, but it is alot stronger than the 700.
